Large animal sculpture in brown patina bronze representing a lioness wounded arrows, signed C. Valton *, XIXth century.
This sculpture is in good condition and is of exceptional quality. It is very decorative. Signed on the terrace on the front.
A note: some tiny wear of time on the patina, see photos.
Animal sculptor, pupil of Barye and Frémiet, familiar with the Jardin des Plantes from the age of fifteen, regularly exhibited at the Salon from 1868 to 1914, first of all plasters and some waxes, then, from 1880, almost exclusively small groups in bronze, often associated with other materials. Most of them are big cats, especially lions or lionesses. The "Lioness Injured", exposed in bronze, is inspired by an Assyrian bas-relief. In spite of the multiplicity of the subjects exposed to the Salon, it does not seem that these works were the subject of abundant editions. Some of Valton's bronzes appear, however, in public sale or in antique shops. The Maison Siot-Decaiville has published the Lionne Blessée. (extract Bronzes of the XIXth century by P. Kjellberg)
