Set of 5 drawings in wash and ink by Constantin d'Aix * representing romantic landscapes of village, chapel, ruins or countryside most certainly in the South of France or Italy, with the collection marks of Louis Deglatiny and the Marquis Ph. De Chennevières, from the 18th century.

These washes are in good condition. They all bear the Louis Deglatiny Collection marks (LSD stamp) and the Marquis Ph. De Chennevières (double C). Three washes even have a wax seal with a coat of arms. Labels on the back of two washes marked "Constantin d'Aix". Other washes by this artist from these same two collections recently went on sale.

A note: a cracked window for a wash, accident on the frames (a frame has been restored / roughly gilded), small dead ants under a window, some yellowing and wear on the papers, take a good look at the photos.

* Jean-Antoine Constantin

better known under the name of Constantin d'Aix (1756-1844) is a French painter, student of David of Marseille. Director of the Aix-en-Provence drawing school, he is considered one of the fathers of Provençal painting. He is considered by some art critics either as a small master of the Ancien Régime or as a pre-romantic inspired by Joseph Vernet and Salvator Rosa. He is in any case a precursor of the work of his pupil François Marius Granet. He produced an impressive amount of Aix and Provence landscapes, generally painted on the motif. This is how he collects monuments and landscapes as varied as the city of Digne, the Fontaine de Vaucluse or the harbor of Marseille. In 1786, he became the third director of the Aix drawing school, succeeding the painter Claude Arnulphy. The Revolution put a temporary end to this institution and Constantine lost his job. In 1807, he left for Digne where he worked as professor of the drawing school for six years. He returned to Aix in 1813 where he benefited from the financial support of his pupil, François Marius Granet4, who granted him a pension of 150 francs and he accepted the modest post of assistant professor at the Aix drawing school under the title of "landscape teacher". In 1817, he received a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition and, until 1827, regularly sent paintings to the Louvre where they caused a sensation. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 18338. He also produced numerous etchings.
