Derived from Christian Latin "crucifixus", the term designates the crucified and by extension a cross bearing a representation of the tortured Christ. It was originally extended to the dying and those condemned to death, or even brandished by preachers on mission. Devotion to the crucifix developed in Europe in the 17th century, with preachers urging the faithful to own one or more crucifixes, to display them in their homes, hung on their bedroom walls or placed on their work desks.
The crucifix was therefore a way for the faithful to prove their devotion and their deep belief in God. The greatest artists and sculptors were thus ordered to order crucifixes for individuals but also for communities and parishes. Many models of crucifixes were therefore created from the 17th century, with the most diverse materials. The most valuable of these, and the most difficult to work on, is undoubtedly ivory. The 18th century ivory Christs are thus finely carved, neat and particularly expressive. They are very often accompanied by the attributes of death: dice, bones and skulls placed at their feet, as well as the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross. These 18th and 19th century ivory Christs are therefore testimonies of the great devotion of the faithful at that time.
