Coconut carved Piggy Bank, Convict Labour, 19th century

Rare coconut carved and perforated, serving as a piggy bank, decorated with characters from several large flowers, convict labor * of the early nineteenth century.

This coconut is in good condition and is of great quality and fine sculpture. This is a work of marine or convict. It is shaped like the head of character or animal (accidents and missing eyes).

A note: small accidents, cracks and scratches, and missing small break (see red arrow), traces of restorations, use wear, see photos.

* The coconut as the tagua was worked by sailors or also by convicts. The latter worked to pass the time but mainly to get some money to improve their lives. Can also be attributed to sailors during their long journeys. These objects are coconut or corozo fine examples of folk art.
