* Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (1685-1766)

member of a large family of carpenters, son of John Tilliard, he received the Masters in 1717 and work all his life street Clery, where also the workshop of his elder brother Nicolas. It is considered one of the most talented seat manufacturers the reign of Louis XV. It plays a major role in the evolution of the rococo style, providing between 1737 and 1739 the "new" seats for the King and Queen at Versailles. his son Jacques Jean Baptiste (1723-1797), a master in 1752, the second active and probably take it a share of more prominent in the operation of the workshop. His son kept the same stamp. We now understand that the allocation of some seats to one or the other is impossible. It identifies several characteristics of the work of Tilliard, which is sometimes find in the work of his son. The most common and most typical pattern carved heart-shaped, often inscribed in a cartridge, adorns the top of the seat and the center, sometimes the angles of the belt. This is virtually a second signature. The second very typical element: a pleated palmetto unfolding fan-shaped at the top of the feet. Finally, the bottom rail of the record draws a sort of hug, or a more graphic description, a caret very stretched. Tillard's works are also distinguished by pure curves, elegant, with ample proportions and a generally fine sculpture, rigorous, very well integrated into the seat rows and never overloaded.
