* Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788):

is a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, philosopher and writer. At the same time academician of the sciences and French academician, he participates in the spirit of the Enlightenment and collaborates to the Encyclopedia, in particular while taking care of the sciences of the nature. His theories have influenced two generations of naturalists, particularly Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Hailed by his contemporaries for his master book Natural History, Buffon was called "Pline of Montbard". Its name is related to the town of Buffon, Côte-d'Or, whose lordship was acquired by the Leclerc family.
