Box or box in shagreen *, adorned with a golden monogram on the lid, interior in rosewood and mother of pearl, in the style of the creators of the 1930s Clément Rousseau, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, vintage Art Deco XX century.
This box is in good condition. We do not have the key.
A note: the lid is slightly curved, slight wear of the inner velvet, small gaps on the box on the front, slight wear of the hinge on the left, see photos (see red arrows).
cartilaginous fish leather (skate or shark) used for a long time in cabinet making, casing, and more recently in leather goods. Halfway between the leather and the mineral, the shagreen is covered with silica beads so difficult to tan. It has different aspects: granular and glossy, or sanded: in this case it is smooth and reveals a small cell compartmentalized surface. There are two types of shagreen: small-grain shagreen and coarse-grained shagreen. The origin of the word "galuchat" goes back, in fact, to the eighteenth century. It is the name of the first craftsman who, in the West, has been able to work with dogfish and ray leather. Jean-Claude Galluchat (with two "l") was a master ruler of King Louis XV ... or rather of the Marquise de Pompadour. This artisan made so much reference to his time by dressing this skin of fish with the rarest objects (chests, trunks, sword handles, etc.) that the proper name became synonymous with the material. Forgotten in the nineteenth, shagreen resurfaced in the decorative arts in 1920, highlighted on the furniture signed by the great creators "Art Deco" as Paul Iribe, André Groult or Jules Leleu.
