* Ovid's Metamorphoses:
Ovid wrote his Metamorphoses around the beginning of our era. Drawing on traditional Greek and Roman legends, Ovid recounts in fifteen songs or books (representing more than twelve thousand verses), a collection of short stories about the metamorphoses of gods, goddesses, heroes, and mere mortals. The illustrated editions of the Metamorphoses (in 1471 in Italy, in 1553 in France) contributed to the influence and success of the text.
