Glove box that can be used as a jewelry box in Boulle marquetry*, blackened wood and gilt brass, with rich decoration of arabesques and vegetal scrolls, base with scrolls and stylized foliage, adorned with a monogram in a trellis on the lid, from the Napoleon III period, 19th century.
This box is in good condition and of superb quality. We have its key, the lock works (a little stiff).
Please note: some minor damage and missing marquetry (especially on the lid), slight cracks and scratches on the wood, wear and tear of age, see photos.
Marquetry originated in the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV, and owes its name to André-Charles Boulle, master cabinetmaker at the King's court (learn more about André-Charles Boulle) (1642-1732). Marquetry involves inlaying precious woods with valuable materials. Having become First Cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV, Boulle's renown, combined with the splendor of Versailles, gave rise to a wealth of furniture and objects crafted in Boulle marquetry, displaying exceptional inventiveness. Boulle introduced a major innovation to his furniture: bronze ornaments to protect the most delicate parts of his pieces.
