Igor Mitoraj was born in 1944 in Oederan to a Polish mother and a French father. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he studied under Tadeusz Kantor . He has lived in France and Italy since 1968. In the early 1970s, fascinated by pre-Columbian art, he traveled to Mexico, where he began sculpting. He returned to Europe in 1974 and, in 1976, exhibited his work in Paris at the La Hune gallery . In 1979, he went to Carrara in Tuscany, where he began to use marble as his primary medium, while continuing to work with terracotta and bronze . In 1983, he established his studio in Pietrasanta . Igor Mitoraj is considered one of the most prominent contemporary artists . Some of his sculptures, often large-scale, are exhibited outdoors in numerous cities across Europe, the United States, and Japan. He currently lives in the south of France. The central theme of Mitoraj 's work is the human body, its beauty and fragility . His work is decidedly postmodernist . While drawing inspiration from classical statuary, particularly its ideal proportions, the artist reminds the public of its human nature and imperfection .
