* Tsugouharu Foujita (1886-1968)

also known as Léonard Foujita, is a full-fledged Japanese artist (painter, drawer, engraver, illustrator, ceramist, photographer, filmmaker, fashion designer ...). He rests in Reims in the chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix which he imagined and painted at the end of his life.
Pupil of the Imperial School of Fine Arts in Tokyo. Rewarded very young at Japanese exhibitions. After a short visit to London, he settled in Paris in 1913, where he discovered living French art. The decorative dominates in his works. Installed at Montmartre, he quickly became one of the picturesque figures. In 1924 he was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo, although he occupied a prominent place at the Salon d'Automne at the Salon des Tuileries. The artist has traveled extensively. Drawing a rare suppleness, a painter, a friend of grace, he used methods quite similar to those of the craftsmen of his country, covering his canvases, using stamps as well as brushes. Foujita was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1925. (extrait Bénézit)
