The Daughters of Charity, or Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul (in Latin, Societas Filiarum Caritatis a S. Vincentio de Paulo), are a society of apostolic life for women of pontifical right. Following their signature with the initials FdlC, they were instituted in 1633 by Saint Vincent de Paul, and their formation was entrusted to Louise de Marillac. They dedicate themselves to the service of the sick and the physical and spiritual care of the poor. The first sister was a cowherd, Marguerite Naseau, who had devoted herself from her youth to teaching young girls to read and write. Throughout the 19th century and until the 1960s, the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul provided healthcare in hospices and asylums, initially in large numbers, but from 1920 onward they were gradually replaced by lay nurses, psychiatric nurses, and caregivers.
