Exceptional and rare large crucified Christ carved ivory, Dieppe work with vanity at his feet, presented in a gilt carved wooden frame decorated with two angels holding the Shroud at the top, as well as heads of cherubs, friezes of shells and floral garlands, antique eighteenth century.

This Christ is in good condition and is of exceptional finesse and quality of sculpture. His features are very fine and precise details (see the veins in his arms for example). Its frame is certainly a work of the South of France. This crucifix is ??in its juice and will be to clean (dirt on ivory).

A note: this lack qua cherub holding the top in his hands, a few small accidents of wood on the frame, the frame has been reinforced in the lower back, wear time, see pictures.

_______________________________

Derived from the Latin Christian "crucifixus" the term refers to the crucified and by extension a cross with a representation of Christ tortured. It originally stretched the dying and sentenced to death, or brandished by mission preachers. Devotion to the crucifix is ??developing in Europe in the seventeenth century, preachers exhorting the faithful to have a crucifix or more to display in their home, hanging on the wall of their room or placed on their desk.
The crucifix was thus a way for the faithful to show their devotion and their deep belief in God. The greatest artists and sculptors and saw pass crucifix control for individuals but also for communities and parishes. Many crucifix models have been created from the seventeenth, with different materials. The most valuable of them, and whose work proved the most difficult, is certainly ivory. XVIII of ivory Christs are thus intricately carved, cared particularly expressive. They are very often accompanied attributes of death: dice, bones and skull placed at their feet, and the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross. These Christs in the eighteenth and nineteenth ivory are evidence of the great devotion of the faithful at that time.
