Large clock in Carrara marble, gray marble and gilded bronze representing a bacchante lying on a lion's hide, model Clodion *, enamelled dial with Arabic numerals, period late nineteenth century.
This clock is in good condition and is of exceptional quality. It is very decorative because of its size. The movement will be revised (the springs are good), it is signed "Silver Medal S. Marti & Co. 1889". We do not have his key. A similar clock is presented p. 254 in the Encyclopedia of the French Pendulum by Pierre Kjellberg, a similar model in white marble is present in the British royal collections.
A note: accidents and lacks on the right hand, some restorations on the legs of the woman (see red arrows), the pearl net of the base of the clock is a little twisted in an angle, some stains on the marble (the woman will be re-clean), some micro-chips and wear of time, look at the pictures.
We are also selling a pair of candelabras of this model that can form a fireplace trim.
Born December 20, 1738 in Nancy and died March 29, 1814 in Paris, is a sculptor Lorraine , then from 1766 French. He has probably spent the beginning of his life in Nancy and Lille. In 1755, he entered Paris in the studio of his maternal uncle Lambert Sigisbert Adam , a sculptor. He remained there four years, then became at the death of his uncle a student of Jean-Baptiste Pigal . He is known for his mythological groups of dancers, nymphs or terracotta bathers. He also performed works of great proportions, such as " Hercules in Rest ", " The Scamander River ", " The Flood ", a bust of Tronchet, etc. He is the author of the "aquatic" decoration of the castle of Digoine.
