Empire gilt bronze clock depicting blind Venus and Cupid, Antéros Renaux, Paris, 19th century
Articles
A finely chiseled gilt bronze clock depicting the goddess Venus seated by a hearth surrounded by a blind Cupid (Eros) searching for his bow and quiver, his brother Anteros hiding an arrow from him, enamel dial with Roman numerals and calendar framed by 2 vestal virgins holding palm fronds, base adorned with swans and a vegetal garland, from the First Empire period, early 19th century.
This clock is in good condition and of remarkable quality. The dial is signed by the clockmaker Renaux in Paris and displays the dates (calendar). The wire-driven movement is in working order and has been serviced (we have its key and pendulum).
Please note: the gilding is worn in places (look carefully at the photos), there are a few small chips on the dial at the winding holes, and there are signs of wear and scratches from age, see photos.
* Eros and Anteros
According to several mythological accounts, Venus gave a brother to Eros, who, bored, had stopped growing. His name is Anteros, literally "Love returned," and he symbolizes reciprocal love, which is strengthened and grows when it receives love in return.
