Coconut carved decoration Working convict, serving gourd, XVIII

Rare coconut carved using gourd, decorated with a love scene with a couple carving their names and the date on the trunk of a tree (1815) and two shepherds guarding their flocks of sheep, of convict labor the early nineteenth century.

This coconut is in good condition and is of great quality and fine sculpture. This is a work of marine or convict. It is shaped like a figure head (missing eye). It is signed and dated on a tree trunk.

A note: normal wear, see photos.

* The coconut as the tagua was worked by sailors or also by convicts. The latter worked to pass the time but mainly to get some money to improve their lives. Can also be attributed to sailors during their long journeys. These objects are coconut or corozo fine examples of folk art.
