This book is in good condition. It is complete. It is autographed on the front page "To Ernst and Karin, January 10. 1949 Regards Max Ernst".

A note: the binding is worn and damaged in places, minute traces of jaunissures on paper, see photos.

* Max Ernst (1891-1976)

was a German painter and sculptor whose work is related to the Dada and Surrealist movements. In 1925, Max Ernst invents the frottage: it allows to run a paper-pencil on a sheet placed on any surface (wood or other texture). This technique is similar to automatic writing of the surrealists writers he encountered as Paul Eluard and Andre Breton. The following year, he collaborated with the painter Joan Miró. In 1933, Max Ernst hand in Italie.C'est here that he composed in three weeks 182 collages from French works illustrated in black and white of the late nineteenth century. In 1934, Alberto Giacometti attending, he began to carve. During the Second World War, he then managed to leave France in Peggy Guggenheim company. They arrive in the US in 1941 and were married the following year. Max Ernst lives in New York where, alongside painters Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall, it helps in the development of abstract expressionism among American painters like Jackson Pollock. From 1953, he moved to Paris and the following year received the Grand Prize of the Venice Biennale, which earned him the exclusion of the movement surréaliste.En 1975 retrospective held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York and the National Galleries of the Grand Palais in Paris published a complete catalog of his works.

** Ernst Van Leyden (1892-1969):

Painter of Dutch origin. Until 1914 he studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, Brussels, Berlin and London. First close Expressionism, he produced his first abstract work in 1948. From its three workshops in Los Angeles, Venice and Paris, he led a life of constant traveling and making new friends with celebrities of his time: Chaplin, Stravinsky, Brecht, Dali, Picasso ... His travels in Vallauris have inspired such later his ceramic work. His work is recognized and bought by the largest museums in the world. In the 50s, he made collages large format in the same spirit as Jasper Johns and Rauschenberg, and applies to "reveal the secret life" of his materials.

Karin van Leyden (1906- 1977)

Born in Germany, Karin studied at the "Kölner Werkschule" in Cologne, where she was a professor R. Seewald and J. Thorn Prikker. Married to Ernst van Leyden with whom she has lived and worked in France, Portugal, Great Britain, Italy, New York, Hollywood and Mexico. The couple will also travel a lot in Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. They also spent much time at Ernst Parisian studio in their home on Lake Loosdrecht Holland. Ernst Karin met many of his contemporaries, such as Marc Chagall, Jules Pascin, Ossip Zadkine and Francis Picabia. She has exhibited at the Galerie Georges Bernheim in 1929. In 1932, after the birth of their son Ragnar, the young family moved to Rio do Milho Portugal. In 1947, Karin and Ernst looking for new inspirations and leave for an extended stay in Mexico, to delve into the ancient Mayan culture. In 1957, after their final return to Europe, and back and forth between Paris and Venice, Ernst buys an abandoned farmhouse outside Paris: Lieutel de L'Enclos. The location is too isolated for Karin, who can not be painting landscapes. She prefers Italy, its life and exuberance. After 30 years of creative intimacy, the two artists will take different paths. From 1953, she worked on oil paintings and collages on. Karin van Leyden eventually died in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1977.
