* Emile Gallé (1846-1904)

only son of Charles Gallé (1818-1902) and Fanny Reinemer (1828-1891) who ran a crystal and porcelain business in Nancy. After a period of apprenticeship in different European cities, Weimar and Meisenthal among others, Emile Gallé was associated with his father's earthenware and glassware trading and decoration business from 1867. It was he who represented his father at the Universal Exhibition of 1867 in Paris where he obtained an honorable mention for glassmaking and at the Universal and International Exhibition of 1872 in Lyon where he obtained a gold medal in class 33 (porcelain and crystals). In 1877, Emile Gallé took over the family business and extended his activities to cabinetmaking in 1885. Already noticed at the Exhibition of Earth and Glass in 1884, Emile Gallé was dedicated to the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1889 with three awards. Art Nouveau furniture was truly promoted by Émile Gallé. Theoretician and facilitator of the Nancy school, he began his activity as a cabinetmaker in 1885. If his most beautiful pieces of furniture are unique pieces, he does not hesitate, in accordance with his desire to democratize art, to organize industrial series production in its workshops.
