Superb rectangular coffee table signed by Roger Capron *, ceramic and metal, decorated with oriental characters, monuments and two birds near a tree, vintage twentieth century.
This table is in good condition. It is signed on the side. The metal is mortised in the corners.
A note: oxidation on metal (can be recovered by polishing), time wear, see photos.
Born in Vincennes 4 September 1922, Roger Capron is primarily interested in the drawing. He was a student of Applied Arts in Paris from 1939 to 1943 and drawing teacher in 1945. (Death November 2006). The discovery of ceramics led him to change media: February 6, 1946, Roger Capron moved to Vallauris where he created a ceramic workshop, Callis and partners with Robert Picault then Jean Derval in 1948, thus contributing to the Renaissance ceramics in Vallauris. In 1952, Roger Capron bought a disused pottery of Vallauris and opened a small factory of ceramic creations for architecture, with 15 workers. His creations will be recognized and rewarded: gold medal in Milan in 1954, silver medal at Cannes in 1955 (the city control passes to him for 1956 with a ceramic band of 150 m2 to the ferry terminal), gold medal in Brussels in 1958. In 1969, he began high-fired stoneware work and received in 1970 the international grand prize of Ceramics. In 1980 his factory employs 120 people. After 1982 Roger Capron addresses a completely new job with unique pieces, close to the sculpture. Assisted by his wife, Jacotte and Jean-Paul Bonnet, the permanent workers he held, he opens a small shop in the main street of Vallauris, and provides sculptures and coins raku to the galleries world.
