*PORT FURNITURE:

Expression designating solid wood furniture (mahogany, aramante, rosewood, lemon) manufactured at the end of the 17th century in the ports of the Atlantic coast, from Bordeaux to Boulogne.
Tree trunks used on ocean-going ships returning from the "Islands" as stowage timber or as return freight were recovered by carpenters and transformed into luxurious furniture on order from wealthy shipowners, merchants or notables from prosperous towns. , such as Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Nantes or Saint-Malo. This furniture, constructed with the greatest care and often decorated with fine sculptures, had the advantage, thanks to its hardness, of escaping wood parasites.
The keyholes and pull handles are made of copper; they brighten up dark woods and resist sea air. Bordeaux port furniture, most often in mahogany from Cuba or Santo Domingo, is distinguished by fairly heavy shapes with accentuated curves. Nantes orders generally have a crossbow front between straight uprights ending in small snail-shaped feet. Falkland cabinets are decorated with octagonal motifs in strong relief. Some cabinets from North Finistère feature lemon tree panels framed with aramante. Port furniture, sought after for the beauty of its wood and its impeccable finish, has not been copied due to a lack of wood species of sufficient quality to reproduce them.

**The Malouine Commode:

It has soberly structured lines, that is to say a slightly curved front and three rows of drawers, the sides, however, remain flat. The absence of carvings and moldings highlights the beauty of mahogany. This chest of drawers is never covered with a marble top, but with a mahogany top with a largely overhanging frame. The bronze fittings contribute to the elegance of the lines.
