Murano glass is renowned worldwide for its unique coloring and processing, and is the hallmark of Venetian glassworks. Many of the important characteristics of Venetian glass objects were developed in the 13th century. Toward the end of that century, the center of the Venetian glass industry moved to the island of Murano. Murano glassmakers maintained their monopoly on the production of quality glass for centuries, developing and refining numerous techniques, such as crystals, enamel, gold wire ornamentation, multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones in glass. Today, Murano artisans still use these centuries-old techniques.
