Dieppe ivories

Sailors from Dieppe would have discovered Guinea before the Portuguese. In 1384, they would have brought back a large quantity of ivory, which would have been at the origin of the vocation of the Norman port. The proliferation of ivory workshops quickly gave Dieppe a preponderance in Europe in the field of tablet maker work . In the 17th century, all sorts of religious or secular objects were made , such as boxes, shuttles, fans, boxes for flies, powder, including scientific instruments such as compasses, sundials, not forgetting famous tobacco graters, or "saucy" . In the 18th century, the new production is characterized by openwork, turned objects. Many objects are executed: carved, guilloché, fluted and saw-cut cases, snuffboxes, shuttles for ladies, knives, baskets, common crucifixes and other "well finished" crucifixes of all sizes, figures of saints, fans, marbles and billiard balls, dice, chess and dominoes . We must also mention the miniatures and portraits. The revolutionary period and the First Empire were unfavorable to working with ivory. During the Restoration , the Countess of Berry settled there and the town became fashionable. His taste for the neo-Gothic is then both in the furniture and in all the production of objects of all kinds. The taste for ivory is very strong: local ivory is taken away as a souvenir or as a present. The craze continued until 1850. The appearance of Celluloid in 1869 dealt a fatal blow to this craft. Dieppe ivories are highly sought after by collectors , depending on the quality of the decoration and the theme.
