Superb and rare kiss of peace or osculatoire * gilt bronze, decorated with the Cross of Christ surrounded by two thieves, with Mary Magdalene (at the foot of the Cross), the Virgin Mary supported by two women and a group of soldiers, certainly the work of Moderno * (or one of his students), period sixteenth century.

The kiss of peace is in its own juice. The handle is broken.

* During the celebration of the Eucharist, the kiss of peace is the liturgical rite before the sacramental communion. This instrument, appeared in the Middle Ages, allows the faithful to transmit the kiss of peace without direct physical contact - often ambiguous - and reminding the religious meaning of the gesture performed.

* Moderno (1467-1528):

pseudonym of Italian goldsmith Galeazzo Mondela, one of the largest producers of bronze plaques of the Italian Renaissance. Jacquemard-André Museum in Paris this artist has several bronze plates whose "Dead Christ Supported by the Virgin and St. John." (Extract Bénézit)
