sacred and blessed machine, square, used to cover the chalice and paten used at Mass. The blade is composed of one or two pieces of fabric often reinforced from the inside by a box and generally lined with a narrow lace or braid. The underside must be white fabric, linen or hemp; top, perhaps in cloth of gold, in silver cloth or fabric the color of the liturgical season, except black, is generally more ornate and marked with a symbol of Christ.
