Bitong bamboo brush pot carved decoration of several Chinese characters, representing the Seven Sages of the bamboo forest *, from China, XIXth century.

This pot is in good condition. It has been restored later (metal frame, slot filled).

A note: some cracks on bamboo, wear of time, see photos.

* The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest:

lived during the troubled Three Kingdoms period (220-280) near the capital of Wei Kingdom, Luoyang, North China. They left poems and musical compositions but also writings on Taoism which testify strong individualities, of great sensitivity and for one of them, Xi Kang, of a remarkable sincerity in his faith to Taoism naturalist. All of them moved away from the political power and the responsibilities that were to be entrusted to them in this period of incessant wars. The group consisted of: Xi Kang (223-262). High dignitary, the greatest poet and the most famous philosopher of his time. Liu Ling (221-300). Poet. Tradition has made him an inveterate drinker. Ruan Ji (210-263). Poet. Ruan Xian (230-281). Nephew of the poet Ruan Ji. A very talented musician: in his honor the Chinese lute has been called ruan. Xiang Xiu (228-281). Fear of Taoism he wrote a commentary on Zhuangzi. Wang Rong (234-305). High dignitary, former general. Shan Tao (205-283). High dignitary. The oldest of the group.
