* Three young women whose hands backed join sketch seem a very slow round. They support an urn containing the heart of King Henry II of France. Incarnation of grace, these figures are Germain Pilon, the other great sculptor of the sixteenth century with Jean Goujon. The monument was erected by Catherine de Médicis for her deceased husband. Pilon carved the three women in the same block of marble, creating the feeling of a slender volume. The theme, the light tunics, the measured elegance of the gestures, the serenity of expression, regularity faces refer to the Antique. The spirit, however, is different. Pilon designs the body like huge flames. It adopts the stretched barrel of Mannerism: slender silhouette, chest high and slender, elongating the neck, hands and tapered legs. On this slender body and closes the thin fabric, sometimes swollen sometimes clad, suggesting the undulation of the flame. The artist deeply cut the material and sculpts draped with sharp edges, which catches the light, rhythm and surface prints the slight movement of the dance. The soft play of arms emphasizes the meaning of the round. The extremely fine marble work completes the beauty of the group. (see louvre.fr)
