* Adolphe Félix Cals (Paris 1810 - Honfleur 1880):

French painter. The son of a worker, Cals received his first training as an engraver, then entered Cogniet's studio, with whom he felt little affinity. Painter of the little people, peasant interiors, scenes of the daily life and family, he prefigured Millet by his subjects. His manner evolved constantly. The smooth touch, a bit heavy from its beginnings acquires the prestesse from 1859, moment of its meeting with the Count Doria, which protected it and welcomed it in his castle of Orrouy (Oise). His palette brightened and refined. Outdoor landscaper, admirer of Corot, he was Jongkind's friend. Linked with the regular artists of the Normandy coast, he stayed at the farm Saint-Siméon of Honfleur (the Lunch Honfleur, 1875, Orsay). Forerunner of the Impressionists, and more specifically of Pissarro, he appeared at their side from their first exhibition, in 1874. (extract "Dictionary of painting" Larousse)
