* The Calydon boar is a fantastic creature of Greek mythology, ravaging the region of Calydon, Aetolia. He is sent by Artemis to punish Oedon, King of Calydon; he had indeed forgotten to make an offering to the goddess as he had done to the other gods during the festival of Thalysia. In order to rid the region of this scourge, Carnation requires the assistance of many heroes from all over ancient Greece including Meleager his son, who brings to the beast the fatal blow. Among the participants is Atalante, whom Meleager loves. At the moment of sharing the remains, Meleager gives the girl, as a reward, the head and skin of the animal. The episode of this hunt is a subject often treated in ancient art.
