Large oil on panel signed E. d'Argence * representing a view of the steamer La Provence ** sailing in the Atlantic at dusk, signed and dated 1908, vintage early twentieth century.

This painting is in good condition and is very decorative due to its large size. Signed and downstairs on the right. This painting was sold at an auction of the Collections of Compagnie Générale Maritime in 1983.

Eugene d'Argence (19853-1920):

is a French painter. Pupil of Pierre François Eugène Giraud and Charles Busson, he paints many landscapes showing mainly views of Corsica, Algeria and Paris and its surroundings and the Marines (Channel coast and Mediterranean coast). He was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1890. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants between 1890 and 1893 and at the Salon National between 1899 and 19133. His works are visible at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris), at the palace Fesch (Ajaccio) and at the Musée Gallé-Juillet (Creil). 5cf will benefit)

was a French transatlantic liner launched in 1906 and sank in the Mediterranean during the First World War while serving as a troop carrier. When it was commissioned, La Provence was the largest and fastest French liner.
