* Charles Ferdinand Ceramano

pseudonym of Charles Ferdinand Semain (1831-1909)) is a painter and Belgian illustrator of the School of Barbizon. The painter's family settled in Brussels in 1849, when he entered the studio of the animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881). He moved to Barbizon in the autumn of 1872 in the studio of Narcisse Diaz de la Peña. It is from this moment that he takes the pseudonym "Ceramano". In Barbizon, he paints animals and landscapes, then composes pastoral scenes with sheep and sheepfolds. His work is influenced by that of Charles Jacque, whom he admires. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1893, 1895 and 1897. (See Bénézit)
