* Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876):

He is the son of Pierre-Samuel-Toussaint Fromentin and Françoise-Jenny Billotte. Gifted in his studies, he left to study law in Paris at the age of 19. In addition to his studies, he wrote reviews and poems in "The Organic Review of the West". After obtaining his law degree, he entered the studio of the painter Jean-Charles Rémond, then that of Louis-Nicolas Cabat the following year, where he learned landscape painting. In 1846, he left France for Algeria, whose landscapes and inhabitants became an important source of inspiration. He returned to Paris in 1847 and exhibited several paintings at the Salon. This first exhibition, crowned with success, opened the door to many future shows: in 1849, 1850, 1857, 1859, 1869, 1872 and 1876. In 1852, he made his third trip to Algeria with his wife. He produced over a hundred works there. He also wrote a sort of logbook which he published in 1854 in "La Revue de Paris". He then reveals both his artistic but also literary talents. In 1856, he published another text in "The Artist", and in 1858 in "La Revue des Deux Mondes". It was his text Dominique published in 1862 in "La Revue des Deux Mondes" which really propelled him to the rank of writer. Suffering from a serious illness, he died in his house in Saint-Maurice on August 27, 1876 at the age of 55. Among the most famous works are Moorish burials (1853), Falcon Hunts in Algeria (1863), The Land of Thirst (1869) and Halte des cavaliers arabe dans la plaine (1870). Eugène Fromentin is today recognized as a great writer but also as a great orientalist painter, particularly gifted for his lighting effects.
