Large oil on canvas representing the portrait of the Marquise de la Fayette*, Adrienne de Noailles (wife of the famous General la Fayette), in country attire in a garden, carrying a bouquet of colorful flowers in her petticoat, a basket of fruit with her sides, signed "Lejay Pinxit 1789, vintage 18th century.

This painting is in good general condition, it is very decorative. Signed and dated on the right side.

Note: small holes on the left side, some defects at the top on the canvas, tiny accidents and wear over time, take a good look at the photos.

* Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles (1759-1807),

known in her youth as Mademoiselle d'Ayen, by her marriage Marquise de La Fayette (1774), is a French aristocrat and the wife of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834)

is a French officer and politician, famous for his involvement in the ranks of the American insurgent army (1777-1783), then in the liberal and reformist wing of the French aristocracy (1784-1792), finally in the liberal opposition to the regime of the July Monarchy which he had nevertheless helped to establish during the Three Glorious Years (July 1830). Convinced of the nobility of the cause of the American insurgents, he joined their side in 1777. Appointed general at the age of 19 by George Washington, La Fayette played a decisive role in the American War of Independence against Great Britain, notably during the victory at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. Nicknamed the “hero of both worlds”, since 2002 he has been one of the eight honorary citizens of the United States. After having fought in the United States, La Fayette worked in France to renovate royal power, before becoming one of the great personalities of the French Revolution, with the drafting of the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen and the command of the National Guard, until his emigration in 1792 after deserting his post hoping to join the Prussian army. He was nevertheless arrested and imprisoned for five years by the Austrian and Prussian authorities. La Fayette was also a major political player in the July Revolution in 1830 and the beginnings of the July Monarchy, however quickly breaking with King Louis-Philippe whose accession to the throne he had supported. During this last period of his life, he also asserted himself as a major supporter of Poland after the insurrection of 1830-1831.
