Pair of oil paintings on canvas signed William Calcott Knell* depicting two seascapes with fishing boats in a rough sea and moored on a coastal landscape in England, titled "Morning Dutch Boats Calm River Dorte" and "Fishing Boats Garmouth Roads", dated 1879, in gilt stuccoed wood frames, 19th century period.
These paintings and their frames are in good condition and are very decorative. They are signed on the frames and on the back of the canvases.
Please note: there are some minor accidents and missing parts on the frames, wear and tear from age, see photos.
Knell was a British painter specializing in maritime subjects. He was the son of William Adolphus Knell (1801-1875), also a marine painter. His father's influence is evident in the composition and execution of his works. However, Knell also drew inspiration from other artists of his time. He primarily painted coastal scenes with ships. With great skill, Knell managed to capture the changing moods of the day and convey his impressions of nature. Between 1848 and 1865, Knell exhibited his works at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and the British Institution.
