* Karel Appel (1921-2006):

a cosmopolitan Dutch artist, is known to have been one of the founding members of the CoBrA group, established in Paris in 1948 (and dissolved in 1951). This European group, composed of artists such as Asger Jorn or Pierre Alechinsky, proposes to go beyond the academies of the time, such as abstract art, considered too rigid and rational. These artists advocate a spontaneous and experimental art, including a set of practices inspired by primitivism. They are particularly interested in children's drawings and the art of fools with an international ambition, faithful to the principles of the avant-gardes. A traveling artist, Karel Appel has lived in several countries, particularly in France, where he settled in 1950. Karel Appel develops a gestural vein in all its dimensions. After a period of transition in the 1970s during which he moved closer to abstraction, the artist experienced a pictorial revival in the 1980s, a period to be honored with a set of great polyptychs.
