**Utagawa Yoshiiku

was a disciple of Kuniyoshi. Son of a teahouse owner, he attended the school of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) from the end of the 1840s. From this time dates a rivalry with Yoshitoshi (another famous print designer) who he allegedly bullied at school. Throughout their career there would have been a rivalry for recognition by the master and by society in general. (note the fact that the two students obtained their master's second character for their first character (Yoshi). When Kuniyoshi died in 1861, Yoshiiku took up the torch from his master in the design of satirical and humorous prints. Very eclectic , he participated in the founding of the Tokyo daily newspaper (Tokyo Nichi Nichi shimbun) in 1872, and directed the newspaper's illustration. From 1877, he stopped drawing prints to concentrate on illustration in the press. this fact his productions are quite few in number, and therefore sought after. He nevertheless had numerous disciples: Ikumaru (active around 1865-1873), Ikukatsu (active around 1880), Kobayashi Ikuhide (active around 1885-1898) and the female artist Ikutoshi (active around 1860).
