Also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, the Virgin of Vladimir, or Vladimirskaya, this icon is one of the most venerated Orthodox icons in Russia. The Mother of God (in Greek, Theotokos), the Virgin Mary, is considered the patron saint of Russia. The icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (the Tolmachi Church, an annex of the museum). Its feast day is June 3. Even more so than the most famous icons, the original has been copied countless times over the centuries, and many copies have acquired considerable artistic and religious significance. The icon is a version of the Eleousa type (Virgin of "Tenderness"), depicting the Christ Child nestled against her mother's cheek. The Mother inclines her face toward the child, who raises an anxious face toward her.
