* Pierre Chanel (1803-1841) is a Catholic saint, martyr of Oceania. A Catholic missionary priest, Pierre Chanel was a member of the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers) and was sent as a missionary to Oceania. He arrived on the island of Futuna in the South Pacific in November 1837 to evangelize the population. His actions aroused opposition among King Niuliki's entourage and he was killed on April 28, 1841. Beatified in 1889, he was canonized on June 12, 1954 and then became Saint Peter Chanel, martyr of Oceania. His feast day is April 28. Several shrines have been erected in his name, including the Basilica of Saint Peter Chanel in Poi on the island of Futuna.
