Rare carved ivory netsuke signed Tomochika depicting faces of characters and/or Noh theatre masks intertwined with each other, Tomochika signature in a cartouche below, provenance Japan (Tokyo), Edo period mid-19th century.
This netsuke is in good condition and is of exceptional quality.
Tomochika was renowned for the finesse of his sculpture and the great care he took in finishing faces, of which this netsuke is a perfect example. Works by this sculptor are highly sought after at auction.

The netsuke is a traditional Japanese garment accessory used to hold sagemono (literally "hanging objects"). Since kimonos have no pockets, various everyday items are carried in small boxes called sagemono. These objects are suspended from the wearer's obi by a cord.
