*Cecilia of Rome

Christian saint. She is said to have lived in Rome in the early days of Christianity. Legend has it that she was a virgin who, forced into marriage, continued to respect her vow of virginity. She lived in Sicily, according to Venantius Fortunatus, and died for the faith in Rome at an uncertain time. She was eventually condemned to martyrdom, after converting many people, including her husband. One passage in her legend states that on her way to martyrdom she heard heavenly music. This anecdote made her the patron saint of musicians, luthiers, and other makers of musical instruments. She is depicted with a crown of flowers, a lily plant, a musical instrument, and a sword. She is one of the most venerated martyrs of the early Church, mentioned in the canon of the Mass since 496.
