Rare set of two polychrome carved wooden processional staffs* surmounted at the top by a statuette of a Saint, most certainly the Virgin Mary, surrounded by pilasters, twisted staffs adorned with acorns at the top, from the 17th century.

These processional staffs are in good overall condition, in their original state, of exceptional quality. The outstretched hands on the two statuettes are missing, which suggests two possible identifications: either the Virgin Mary / or Mary Magdalene holding an ointment jar (now missing).

Note: Part of the handle is missing from the lower section of one stick (which explains why it is shorter). On this stick, two pilasters and one tassel are missing. On the other stick (the larger one), one tassel and one pilaster are missing. There are cracks in the wood, damage, and losses to the polychromy. There are old wormholes and signs of wear consistent with age. Please examine the detailed photos carefully.

* A processional staff

A staff is a religious object, primarily used in Catholic worship, and featured in processions and pilgrimages. It consists of a long pole surmounted by a religious decoration, often a statuette, sometimes under a canopy, of the Virgin Mary in a halo of flames, and often also a representation of a saint, generally made of carved, painted, or gilded wood. Depending on the nature of the emblem, staffs can be distinguished as those of guilds, confraternities, or religious congregations. Processional banners are similar, but different in nature and use.
