The carved wooden objects of the Black Forest are not originally from Germany but were made in the Brienz region of Switzerland. The tradition of woodworking is ancestral in this region, and the inhabitants continue the practice of carved wood on house facades, furniture, and everyday objects. The sculptors excel in particular in the representation of wild animals in their natural environment. In the 19th century, these naturalistic sculptures of the Black Forest became very fashionable and highly prized.
