Perpetual calendar with thermometer and watch holder in ebonite*, decorated with a fantastic animal with outstretched wings (a winged griffin), as well as plant arabesques, from the Art Nouveau period, late 19th century.
This calendar is in good overall condition. The thermometer is detached and will need to be reattached.
Please note: some scratches and wear from time, see photos.
Charles Goodyear obtained ebonite in 1839 by subjecting natural rubber to a prolonged (and extreme) vulcanization process. Its ebony-like color is the origin of its name. His brother Nelson Goodyear patented it and commercialized it in 1851.
