* Mercury glass or mercurised glass

is a glassmaking technique designed to give a silver or gilded appearance to an ornamental glass object. Sometimes called "poor man's money", or silvered glass, it was used to create objets d'art and everyday life. The money denomination of the poor could come from the fact that the poor social classes of the nineteenth century were not able to obtain silverware and therefore bought mercury glass objects, cheaper. Among the objects created, we find most of the classic pieces of silverware that are not cutlery: essentially candlesticks, a large part of vases, glasses and containers. More rarely wig-holders and Christmas balls. Mercury glass is a double-walled blown glass whose interior has been filled with a silver solution before being sealed (the hole in the base is then clogged). The exterior of these objects was often painted, gilded or silver, decorated with floral motifs.
