* Catherine of Alexandria

better known as Saint Catherine, is a virgin and martyr who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Tradition places her birth in Alexandria and dates her death, at eighteen years old, in the same city, around the year 307. She refused to marry Emperor Maximin II Daïa, who therefore had her beheaded. His legend and his cult spread from the East to the West and are widely attested after the Crusades. Her feast day, November 25, now gives rise to various popular celebrations, including those for young marriageable girls over twenty-five, called catherinettes.
