* The Vienna Bronzes:

The tradition of Vienna bronze figurines is widespread, especially in France. It was imported to Vienna by Mathias Bermann in 1850. He specialized in metal ornaments for pipes, and it was at this time that he began to cast and paint figurines. This was the beginning of the Vienna bronzes, which would become world-renowned. Towards the end of the 19th century, the golden age of metalworking in Vienna, numerous workshops were established. During the 19th century, artists created nearly 10,000 models of bronze figurines. These renowned works were exported to major cities such as New York, London, and Paris. Vienna bronzes are well known for their high technical quality as well as the great attention paid to detail, movement, and expression. Each of these works is a unique piece; the carving is done by hand, and the details vary between two pieces. (See ProAntic Magazine)
