The carved wooden objects of the Black Forest did not originate in Germany but were made in the Brienz region of Switzerland. The tradition of woodworking is ancient in this area, and the inhabitants continue the practice of carving wood on house facades, furniture, and everyday objects. The carvers particularly excel at depicting wild animals in their natural habitat. In the 19th century, these naturalistic Black Forest carvings became very fashionable and highly prized.
