Painted ceramic tobacco jar depicting a seated dog, wearing glasses, an overcoat and a hat, smoking a pipe and reading the Times newspaper, signed JM for Johann Maresch*, origin Austria, 19th century.

This pot is in good condition, superb quality. Signed and numbered underneath.

Note: some wear and tear on the paintwork, wear consistent with age, see photos.

* Johann Maresch (1821 - 1914)

is known for its ceramic and terracotta figurines. Johann Maresch (1821-1914) joined Adolf Bähr as sales manager in 1845, who had taken over the first production of siderolith ceramic household items in Aussig in 1841. His son Ferdinand joined the company in 1873.
