Departure of wooden staircase finely carved, representing a dolphin Neptune *, most likely from a home of a shipowner, eighteenth century.

This dolphin is in good condition, it is of a remarkable quality and is very decorative.

This stair railing departure has the chimerical shape of the Neptune dolphins, represented since antiquity (mosaics of Ostia, ancient port of Rome) and largely taken up by Renaissance artists (notably Bernini): the covered body of scales, eyes surrounded by concentric volutes, a dorsal fin and two fins on each side of the head.

The rich shipowners of the 18th century took advantage of their home to decorate it ostentatiously. Here, the reference to Neptune (protector of fishermen and boatman), through its animal-attribute, underlines the will of its owner to emphasize his activity, the origin of his fortune but also symbolically allows him to put his business under the protection of the sea god.

A note: the upper plate and base have been added later, small slot in the top, a few small accidents and wear on the wood, look at the pictures.
