Gouache signed Léon Haffner* representing a starboard view of a French frigate sailing: it is more precisely the famous training cruiser Jeanne-d'arc*, recognizable by its silhouette and structure, in a natural wood frame, from the 20th century.
This gouache painting and its frame are in good condition. It is signed underneath and bears the inscription "To Mr. Jacques Grasset - Souvenir". It is under glass.
This refers to the training cruiser Jeanne d'Arc (1931-1964), whose brief history is as follows: A training cruiser for midshipmen, it completed eight campaigns before the outbreak of World War II. Decommissioned in Martinique after the armistice, it waited until June 1943 to join the Free French Naval Forces (FNFL). It participated in operations in Corsica and Italy, then in the Allied landings in Provence. From 1946, it resumed its training cruises for 19 campaigns until 1964, when it was decommissioned.
Note: slight soiling and some signs of wear and tear, see photos.
A painter and cartoonist, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. He was also a painter and illustrator of marine scenes, many of whose works are held in the Musée de la Marine in Paris (excerpt from Bénézit).
