Watercolor landscape painting herd, E.Doigneau, 20

Breton landscape watercolor of a beach, with a young woman leading his herd of cows on a beach beside the Aven, in southern Finistère in Brittany, signed Ed * Doigneau, vintage late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This watercolor is in good condition and its context (most recent). It is under glass. It is signed on the bottom right.

A note: slight wear on the time frame.

* Edward Doigneau (1865-1954) (Ec en)

Pupil of Jules Lefebvre and T. Robert-Fleury. Member of French Artists since 1901. He obtained a third class medal in 1904 and a 2nd class in 1909. (Excerpt Bénézit)

Doigneau gives a festive air of calm and peace to most of his works. Ecole Polytechnique, he devoted himself primarily to the military profession which he abandoned in 1900, exposing for the first time at the Salon that year and attending the studio of Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. His inspiration: the Camargue, the forest of Fontainebleau, Brittany and North Africa. He practices more readily watercolor than oil. This animal is a high class, and its landscapes are often only pretexts to describe the ass or the horse. The skill of his hand never betrays its sensitivity. (See Dictionary of little Masters of Painting by Cabanne and Schurr).
